Greetings thunderdome participants!!
I am happy to announce the next iteration of the Crime and Punishment community event of Thunderdome!
(ISD's, I know this is the third thread, please keep this one open as I will be updating from now on, thanks!)
As always, please post up in thread, or send me an EVE mail if you will be participating. Rules for this round are as follows:
1) 50m entry fee, payable to a third party (I'm going to contact chribba) Winner take all, minus his fee. 2) Double elimination bracket! 3) Matches will scale based on the round (cruiser/BC/BS -- this will be easy to see in the bracket) 4) As always, matches are held in lowsec, two ships enter, one ship leaves. Leaving grid forefits your match, and second match if applicable. 5) No help from outside.
All participants are encourage to record events! So far this has been a great event, let's see if we can get a few more pilots this time around.
Two ships enter, one ship leaves.

Carrie-Anne Moss wrote:Offgrid boosting allowed? Or do people have to be in same fleet? Who is squad boss? Can you WWF Royal Rumble squad warp the other dude out of grid if you are appointed squad boss?
Both combatants are in the same fleet, thereby assuring no boosters are in effect (unless both parties agreed prior to the match)
I suppose you could squad warp, but why? After seeing this question I would immediately flag exempt from warp...

PS bs bracket will likely be heavily dominated by lack of diversity and is a huge sp scale compared to cruisers thus limiting the field to older players.
PSS rules on deployable structures?
Meh, nobody here is new anyhow. And if they are, its doubtful their SP in cruisers would advance them to BC anyhow.
No rules with deployables, anything goes.

Vimsy Vortis wrote:This shouldn't be held in lowsec by the way, it should be done in highsec using duel invites. That way neutral interference is significantly less likely. A stream for the entire thing should probably be arranged too.
Many of our participants cannot use highsec due to standings/sec status. We have had two rounds of this previously, and nobody has been 3rd partied yet.... yet.
TBH, the amount of outright EMPTY lowsec systems (some with direct connections to HS) is staggering. Pick a lowsec, jump in, meet your opponent at a safe, and get it on. Unless someone is LOOKING for you with a combat prober, its a relatively low chance of that occurring. As for the stream, due to schedule conflicts, we usually just have both combatants pick a time that suits them both, and one records it. That way, nobody misses out because they cant get off/are busy/wife is nasty that day.
lmmortalist wrote: This could be fun but I also am in need of some sort of a schedule before signing up.
Domino Vyse wrote: How do we stand with dates and times? Sorry if I missed it but I'm on my phone.
My apologies. I didnt realize that many more people would be interested this time around, I should clarify the schedule.
So, when you register, ill add your name to the bracket listed in the second post in this thread. You make contact with your opponent, set a time, and duke it out. Report back on here with W/L (and a recording, if you like) and ill update the brackets with that, after verifying the killmail. The bracket lasts until the last match is over. So, ideally, no real rush or chance of missing your matches.
Hope that settles it?

When it comes to warping off grid, is it simply a game of trust in case neither party will be able to fraps the fight? Not something I'm planning to do myself, just wondering about the what if -scenarios.
Heh, that's a good question. We haven't run into that yet, and while I don't expect it, I suppose the best thing to do would be to record the fight.

EDIT: Also, the bracket clearly says "barge", implying mining barges and their T2 counterparts.Regardless of the distinction, if he has a hauler (and I think it is based on a conversation with him) that can perma-tank a Skiff, it can pretty much perma-tank any hauler because they'll have less DPS than a Skiff, not more. I'm still dying to see what folks come up with though. If I end up having to compete in that bracket it may have to be on an alt. Tengu doesn't have any industrial or mining barge skills at all. And I'm not willing to change that. lol

Ok fellas, so in our haste to expand the Thunderdome contest to more pilots, we have overlooked a serious timezone issue. lmmortalist is six hours ahead of his first matchup. Ill need to adjust future brackets according to TZ availability for the first few matches (obviously the latter ones will be sorted by win/lose stats).
For now, we have a number of pilots who havent fought their first matchup.
Is anyone EU timezone that can swap with Heknai and face Immortalist?? Mail me or post up if you can make the swap, and ill adjust the matches accordingly. This is only if you havent already competed in round 1.

Congrats to his win!
Ill have the vid up as soon as I figure out how to do all the cool things Bronson does with his.
Brief description:
My first time flying an Oruthus. (Hey, thats why we are here, right?) I figured that I would have plenty of damage application with RLM's and packed a target painter with me in case I ran into a drone boat. Anyone who looks at the KM will see I packed auto-targeters in my cargo, just in case my opponent pulled a Leto and brought jams. My fit was setup for kiting, obviously, but I DID NOT NOTICE THE INCREDIBLY SHORT target locking range of 62KM before it was waaaaay too late. He had me using my shield charges before I could even get a lock.
Oh, and I made sure to pack a cargo hold full of drugs that I forgot to use.
I look forward to facing Ralph in the first round loser bracket!

Next thunderdome will have a few new features.
We have approved:
1) A T3D round. All races have them, and they are an incredibly short train (9 days max, I think, to get LVL 4). 2) Hard deadlines for matches to be completed by. One per week, due by downtime on the last day.
We are considering:
1) Timezone-specific matchups for the first few fights. This will allow participants in differing zones to compete with each other before needing to accommodate someone else schedule at 0200 hrs. This will be based on the number of opposing timezone participants we get. Details in the next signup thread.
2) Bans. Each participant will be able to ban one hull type per round.
We welcome your input on the considerations, and, please feel free to ask for something if you think it will help as we attempt to grow the event.

The specific ship. Thanks.. Should have clarified that.

As in the past, the only restrictions will be on the T2 variants of battleships (because marauders in bastion mode will never die), and no T3 cruisers because of the absolute brick you can make them.
We will leave T3D's out of the next round, but honestly, you all need to get them trained. Why? Because they are a blast. The mode switching feature really opens up the possibilities, and even though the jackdaw may have the best-in-class tank, I have seen them melted by heckates up close. I fully plan on implementing them in the coming months.

God... I thought for certain that you had him. If you hadnt burnt out... and maybe a bit more range control... that one was CLOSE. Yeah, I should have taken the time to properly try to exploit the Ferox's optimal bonus. My main worry at the start was his active tank. I was worried he was dual-rep, which would be a perfect counter to me. The only way I could manage range was to use the MJD, and my projection at 105 km is only 260 dps, which probably would not have cracked his active tank. As he dropped into structure just outside of scram range I got greedy. :/ I was thinking about my midslots too much, and I think I did an okay job there, but forgetting the most important part. Next time I just need to stick to my guns. :D

As to pay to win and rules.... Being a C&P sponsored event it was made clear in an earlier thread that it's not to be about a complex set of rules. It's to be about all that has made the fortunes of the various folks that call this forum section home - cunning, guts, skill, wits and an outright lack of regard for conformity.
If anyone truly feels out isked and unable to participate, send me a mail and I'll give you some pointers and such to help you get through.
I'll give you an opinion while I'm up on my soap box. Winning the event is what I would consider and unfortunate consequence of the necessity of a bracket providing a reasonable way to procede from beginning to end. I'm putting up prizes for the winners just to generate more interest. Don't make it about winning. Watch the videos and read the battle reports - THAT is what this is about. Thunderdome - 2 guys in 1 guy out. The meat of this event is in each individual fight and the entertainment we all get from it.
To that end I'm now moved to present 4 prizes from my prize locker.
Bracket Winner - some frigate - determined by the bracket Best Fight Winners - cruisers(2) - determined by some unfair form of group voting Best Content of the Event - BS - determined by secret discussion between Mo and Leto
I'm now satisified with my thunderdome prize offerings. I'll detail out the hulls and other knick knacks before it's all over. Any and all issues with my prize scheme can be mailed directly to Bronson.
This is perhaps the best description of thunderdome yet.

Tengu and I just had our brawl.
Great fight, closer than I thought at the end.
I picked a brawling Cyclone, Tengu went with a brawling Navy Brutix. ECM drones abound. EM Missiles usually do fairly well unless you specifically tank for them, so I pre-loaded Mjolnir Rage missiles. Knowing im using a hull that boosts shield reps, I went with a full crystal pod and blue pill.
I picked a warp-in at 20KM to get a good size up on the start of the match, we both landed on grid, and I set up my orbit to 17km (to let my Rage HAM's reach, but deny him his possible nuet and scrams). As I settled into my orbit, he cut it rather quickly. (Note to self, manually pilot next match. Keeps him guessing his angles.)
He lands a flight of ECM jams on me and distracts me (another note to self, add a separate tab for "fleet drones" for thunderdome matches.) I didnt see them on my overview because fleet... sigh. Too late now. Im jammed out and he has me scrammed.
Start my shield boosts to keep my tank afloat.
Launch my ECM drones. No dice.
Re-acquire target. Still see no drones, no matter what tab I load. Overheat a few volleys to catch up on DPS. Since I cant see his drones, I turn on the little autocannons I brought along to kill them with. Any DPS helps right? Unheat launchers to make sure I dont blow them up. Damnit, he is fckin hull tanked. I hate hull tanks.
****. Take blue pill. Always forgot the drugs.
ECM drones finally paid off. MWD back out to non-scram range. Pull drones and resume DPS application. I take this opportunity to reload my ASB. He cuts my orbit again (good piloting skills, BTW) and im back jammed and scrammed. While my ECM drones did one jam, his landed at least 3. I re launch my flight of dishonor drones, and spam my MWD to try and pull range in the event of a lucky jam. I dont get it. I boost right through my reload in an attempt to keep my tank up.
****. I realize im flying directly away in a straight line, still set to "orbit 17km". I bet he enjoyed those zero-transversal hits from his blasters. Set orbit to 500m in an attempt to draw some type of tracking penalty from his blasters. Im better than that! MANUAL PILOTING NEXT TIME!
Still no joy on the jams. My shields drop and im in armor before just as the reload finishes. I REALLY think im getting ready to explode as he nears low structure and I near low armor. Boost back up a few cycles....
Kill: Tengu Grib
That was CLOSE.
Good fight mate. Best I have had yet.

I would like to participate in one of these at some point. But it looks like mobility is the defining factor, and snakes are expensive.
Thinking about fits that aren't limited to long point range is...strange. I'm 90% sure I did my match with a set of +4's that was fitted with med blaster implant and other things designed to support a Proteus completely useless for a hull tanked vni with neuts. Implant's will only make the difference in close situations. For everything else scissors/paper/rock I've done all of my matches using straight-up +3s or +4s (No pirate sets or Genolutions) and nothing ending with a number higher than "3" in the remaining slots. I've also used synth boosters for one fight (but mainly because, like Leto, I apparently have a hard time remembering to take them). One fight relied quite heavily on my implants and boosters to work, but even then the overall cost was pretty low. To date, I don't think anyone has been podded in Thunderdome. I personally don't even try as a matter of courtesy. Should we consider incorporating that as a rule for future brackets?
Well, nobody had snakes last night. I used a crystal pod that I have had for a few years, yes, its probly around 500m, but risk. My other slots were regular missile bonus plugs.
I have never even attempted to target a pod in thunderdome, and on both of my wins, I have offered the loot back to the loser. This isn't about money, its about content and learning, and I daresay community.

I think the current Thunderdome rules allow for good competition without draining people's wallets (unless they want to spend lots of isk).
I could bring all T1 ships to thunderdome and still have a good chance of winning if I did my theorycrafting correctly. Even if I didn't win, I would still get precious pvp experience and some good fights.
Thunderdome is like a good road trip where most of the fun is not arriving at your destination, but seeing the sights and doing cool stuff along the way.
Exactly this.
Moreover, to date, id be remiss if I didnt point out that MOST of the expensive stuff dies in a fire. My Cyclone T2 fit was a good 110M tops, while Tengu's faction variant cleared 200m. Its all about how, what, and why. Did my implants help? Yeah, probably. Could he have smoked me without them? There is a chance.
But there is also a chance he fit a smartbomb for the express purpose of blapping my pod if I died.
Risk vs reward people. The core concept of what EVE is suppose to be.

The issue with sniper fits is that you have to also be able to deal with someone who gets in under your guns. That means tank and tackle, or being mobile enough to dictate range for the entire fight, which makes fitting a bit interesting. A typical fleet sniper fit would likely die in a fire in Thunderdome. The benefit to short/medium range fits is always DPS, and if Thunderdome has taught me anything it's that DPS is secondary to tactics. Leto Thule wrote:I know right.

Yes. If you lose match "I" you will fight again in match "J".
If anyone else loses in "I" its over.

It's rather hard to get proper matches set up, especially if you're working. Generally how I've been trying to set things with my matches is agree to a time to be on at and going from there. But I think Lodestone has been preoccupied by priorities. Alas, Such is life. EDIT: Also as a note, I post on the forums a lot, but sometimes I'll post really quick without even logging on. So just because I poke around on the forums doesn't mean I'm active ingame.
Yeah, RL comes first. Just trying to get things moving.
This is likely going to be the last match I host on here. Really thinking of taking an evecation for a few months.

It has a very solid tank when not under neut pressure though. I had wanted to bring a scorpion too, but got dissuaded by its dps. Most active tanked Battleships I've seen (with boosters/shiny mods) take at least 1k dps to break, so I found myself forced into a raven. Props to Leto for coming up with the depot idea though. When I saw it appear I was confused, but after I was permajammed I understood why Bronson, i'll contact you in game and we can arrange a time. I'm clear most evenings this week except Tuesday. Lets close up this thunderdome in style.
And I was hoping you didn't bring auto targeter missiles. But you did.

Lodestone Toyee wrote:Is there a way to dislike posts? If there was I really would dislike this rookie ship idea.
Not everyone has a 300mil edition rookie ship they've been waiting to use, and from the crafting I've done so far it seems like the limited edition rookie ships are incredible improvements over the T1s. They are so much better in every respect. (I'm willing to retract this statement if someone wants to step up and prove me wrong)
Of course its possible to lose in one, but clearly the advantage goes to the person(s) who are willing to shell out 300mil on a rookie ship in this bracket. A quick comparison between the taipan vs the ibis, or the violator vs the velator, clearly shows the advantage the limited edition has over the T1. 50% more primary slots, plus massive utility and damage bonuses make faction rookie ships clearly the way to go. Since frigate duels like these end rather fast(usually), the person with 50% more dps/tank from their faction rookie ship is very likely to win unless mistakes are made.
I don't mean to complain because I normally reject the notion that pvp (especially this thunderdome) is pay to win. Eve is a marvelously balanced game and its awesome to see cheap ships beat shinier ones. I don't think that balance exists, or was intended to exist with the special edition ships. I would have mentioned this earlier, but I wasn't considering this bracket since I assumed I would be knocked out long ago.
Anyway, felt I would throw out these thoughts before the match to prevent the possible "hes butthurt he lost". In the name of providing content I'll gladly continue, just wanting to know if anyone else had considered these implications of a rookie ship duel.
tl;dr grr I would prefer to spend 300mil on a more practical endeavor.
I'd have to argue that the entirety of eve is the same way. It's risk vs reward, a core concept here. Most faction ships are vast improvements over their t1 variants. Gila vs moa?
However I do blame myself, as originally the losers bracket finals were to be in barges or haulers until noragen showed me they would likely perma tank each other. It was the only thing I could come up with that said " losers round finals" lol...
Anyhow, good luck in the finals. I'd love to see Bronson dethroned...

Guys maybe it's just me, but 300m is pretty meh. Things in EVE exsist to die in fires. I don't know that I'd actually use it, but I'm not going to disallow it, especially when the cost is the ONLY limiting factor seeing as skills aren't going to discount anyone.

Does that make it an iWin button for the person who decides to bring it? Although I'd laugh hysterically for hours if the opponent brought an Ibis and managed to keep it jammed long enough to kill it.
And that's why. Because it doesn't mean it's a 100% chance. It also doesn't mean someone won't gank you on the way to the fight. It also doesn't mean the other guy isn't a better pilot and is going to win anyhow.
You can use ISK to bolster your chances of winning, but not to substitute for lack of skill.

Just like everything else in the game, the guristas one is the best. It's called the taipan, and you can get it up to around 150 dps with a decent tank and the ability to fit damps or t/d.

I have the winner. Immotalist. We'll work out the delivery terms of your victory frigate. It will be near amarr. I'd prefer low sex if that's ok w/ you.
I need C&P input on the best fight of the series. The 2 competitors in the 'best fight' will get cruiser of my choosing (I haven't quite nailed that down yet). So what I need is your pick and your reason (keep it short.... unless it's entertaining. I don't want a lot of math and hoo haw - just a winning fight and why it made your pickle crisp)
Best competitor overall - I think thats an arbitrary decision by Mo and Bronson, or Mo and Leto. I know it's Mo and someone. Honestly I don't care. The sticky part is Bronson is on a break and Mo hasn't been seen or heard of in a few weeks. Leto - your a scumbag and go back on your word, but help me out here. What's a good default pair to pick the best performer overall? I'll accept you as one and anyone but Vimsy as the other. If it comes to that - pick your poison and let me know.
Mo.... calling professor Mo...... where are you?
Best fight IMHO was myself and tengu grib for the BC round.
Best competitor choice shouldn't be mo because he isn't here. Noragen would be a good choice to assist.

Since Leto didn't get a lot of participants in the new attempt at a thunderdome event, he (Serendipity) also wished we come to some sort of an overall decision between the best player and the most entertaining match in the tournament. I suggest either Leto or Noragen try to make sense of what the people have voted so far and make those decisions.
